Why See a Pelvic Floor PT During Both Pregnancy and Postpartum

Were you told to see a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist during pregnancy or postpartum? Maybe it was your OBGYN, a friend, or even a stranger who saw your growing belly or newborn. Perhaps it was a flood of social media ads screaming about pelvic floor PT once the algorithm caught wind of your pregnancy. But why? What’s the hype? And is it really worth adding another appointment to your already packed schedule? Can’t you just do some deep breathing to relax your pelvic floor and call it good?

In my humble, unbiased opinion (okay, I’m totally biased)—seeing a Pelvic Floor PT during pregnancy and postpartum goes way beyond learning how to kegel or relax your pelvic floor. Or at least... it should. These phases of life come with huge changes—not just to your body, but to your entire lifestyle. Working with someone who truly understands the physical, emotional, and functional shifts of pregnancy and postpartum means you’ll get personalized support, guidance, and real-life advice. The goal? To help you feel informed, confident, and empowered to make decisions that work for you.

A prenatal or postpartum PT can help you work toward your physical goals—whether that means continuing to build strength, maintaining it, or simply moving your body in gentle, feel-good ways. As the weird stuff starts to pop up (leaking when you run, cramping during breastfeeding, or feeling like you have zero time for yourself), a PT can help you navigate it all. They’ll address symptoms, explain what’s normal (even if it feels anything but), and share sneaky, realistic strategies to move your body while working with the new and always changing schedule you now have.

There was a time when no one knew (or cared) how to support pregnant or postpartum individuals. The advice was often: do nothing during pregnancy—and then suddenly do everything once you hit six weeks postpartum. Thankfully, we've come a long way since then. You deserve informed, personalized care. You deserve real answers, not vague reassurance. And most of all, you deserve support every step of the way.

Here is what new moms are saying about seeing a PT both during pregnancy and postpartum:

💗 “I started seeing Juliana after my midwife recommended I see a pelvic floor therapist. Leaking every time you laugh, walk up stairs, jump etc., is not ok even if it is common. Within a month, I completely stopped. I was 24 weeks pregnant when I started seeing her and the breathing exercises helped a lot. I had a very rough pregnancy and delivery. There are so many things I could not do even if I wanted to. Now nearly 4 months postpartum I am still seeing Juliana. My pelvic floor is getting better every day. We are slowly adding more exercises, and even though I am not 100% comfortable getting back on the wall just yet, I feel my core has become so much stronger and I'm still not leaking! It's a process, long and slow because having a baby means finding time is difficult. Juliana has been understanding, given realistic exercises and goals, and most of all, shown compassion and understanding. Her patience with me and willingness to find solutions when I'm not getting something is a breath of fresh air.” -Noemi H.

💗 “As a climber I didn’t want to give up my passions, strength, and mental well being just due to pregnancy. Juliana’s pregnancy and postpartum specific program helped me work on strength training during pregnancy which I had previously never done! With climbing specific workouts, and workouts that engage my core, and techniques that supported my pelvic floor. The hands on tailored care provided both in pregnancy and postpartum helped me feel stronger than ever, plus I never had bladder problems during or after pregnancy. Juliana created workouts specific to my needs such as back pain to help me be my strongest for me and my baby postpartum. Pelvic floor care is a must in pregnancy and beyond, and I am so glad I chose to take care of myself!” - Saige C.
